Hearts & Histories is a youth-led nonprofit and living legacy archive — connecting the wisdom of elders with the curiosity of students through preserved stories, pen-pal friendships, and community events. A bridge across time.
“Wisdom is the only treasure that multiplies when shared.”
— the idea at the heart of everything we do
Hearts & Histories preserves human ingenuity in an age of advanced technology by connecting generations through sharing the wisdom and life stories of senior citizens, pen-pal partnerships, and community events.
Many seniors go days without a real conversation. A visit, a call, or a letter reminds them someone is listening — and cares.
Every elder carries a lifetime of memories. We record them before they're lost, adding each one to our living legacy archive.
When students and seniors share time, wisdom flows one way and energy the other. Both leave with more than they came with.
Technology moves fast, but wisdom takes a lifetime. Six ways we make sure the two never lose touch.
Students visit our partner senior living communities on a recurring basis — spending quality time, sharing conversations, and building real friendships with residents, week after week.
We sit down with seniors to document their life stories, memories, and wisdom — preserving each history in our living legacy archive and sharing it with a wider audience.
Each participating senior is paired with a high school student pen pal — and young children in the future — for ongoing written correspondence that grows into lasting friendship.
We organize group outings that bring seniors and students together outside the residence — creating shared experiences and brand-new memories beyond familiar walls.
Students plan and host festive celebrations for holidays and resident birthdays — complete with handmade cards, decorations, and activities, so no milestone goes uncelebrated.
From music therapy to games and crafts, we facilitate group activities that spark joy, stimulate memory, and foster connection — every session designed to be shared.
Dear friend,
You asked what life was like when I was your age. Well — no phones, one radio, and a whole lot of imagination. I'd love to tell you about the summer of 1962 in my next letter. Thank you for listening. It means more than you know.
— Your pen pal
Many seniors experience loneliness, and many young people grow up without hearing firsthand what came before them. When the two connect, both walk away richer.
Every story we record, every letter exchanged, and every visit made adds to a living legacy archive — a bridge across time that keeps human experience alive in a world of screens.
Get InvolvedEvery event is a chance to bring generations together. Here's what we've been up to.
Sweet lemonade, sweeter impact! 💛
H&H teamed up with the Meadow Lakes senior community for an afternoon Lemonade Social — sipping fresh lemonade while enjoying a live folk music band and crafting alongside Hearts & Histories volunteers.
Residents and volunteers spent the afternoon swapping stories over cold drinks and handmade crafts, proving that connection can start with something as simple as a paper cup.
Want us to bring an event to your community? Let's make it happen!
Host an Event With UsYou don't need special skills — just kindness, curiosity, and a little time. Students can earn community service hours, too.
Fill out our quick volunteer form below and tell us what interests you — writing letters, recording stories, or helping at events.
We'll pair you with a senior pen pal or a program that fits your schedule, and walk you through everything before you start.
Write, visit, listen, and record. Watch a friendship grow — and help preserve a story that would otherwise be lost.
Exchange monthly handwritten letters with a senior partner. Great for students who love writing.
Interview seniors and help turn their memories into written or recorded keepsakes for their families.
Set up, host, and join community events — lemonade stands, game days, holiday visits, and story circles.
Help spread the word — make posters, manage social media, and connect us with schools and senior centers.
Our volunteers visit these partner senior living communities regularly — and we're always looking to grow.

Hearts & Histories was started by three high school friends who believe the best stories are the ones we almost forget to ask about.
